WHICH IS?
It is an alteration of the most superficial layer of the skin (corneal layer), with hypertrophy and scaly or warty appearance, and the number of lesions can be varied.
Types of keratoses:
Actinic keratosis (or actinic keratosis): it is a skin lesion caused by the sun (therefore called actinic). It usually appears in areas exposed to the sun such as face, ears, scalp on bald spots, neck, back of hands and forearms. When located on the lips, they are called actinic cheilitis. People with light skin, blond or red hair, and light eyes (blue or green) are the most susceptible to presenting these lesions that are characterized by reddish or slightly brownish areas, with a rough and keratosis surface. It is also known as solar or senile keratosis, since chronic sun exposure causes it. That is why they are more commonly found in elderly people. It is considered a premalignant lesion, as it can progress to squamous cell carcinoma. The greater the number of lesions, the greater the chance of progressing to a carcinoma;
Seborrheic keratosis: it is a benign lesion of the skin, usually rounded or irregular, brownish, brownish or black in color, and warty in appearance. It appears mainly on the face and trunk and can grow to become bulky. It is usually of genetic origin;
Pilar (or follicular) keratosis: it is characterized by small reddish or whitish spots, mainly on the arms, legs, buttocks and cheeks due to the accumulation of keratin in the hair follicles. The skin looks rough and dry and can appear on any skin type, however it is more common in patients with atopic dermatitis. They tend to disappear with age, and there seems to be a genetic predisposition.
