WHICH IS?
The aging of the organism as a whole is related to the fact that the somatic cells in the body start to die and are not replaced by new ones, as it happens in youth. This is linked, among other phenomena, to cellular aging. Physiologically, aging is associated with loss of fibrous tissue, a slower rate of cell turnover and a reduction in the vascular and glandular network. The barrier function that maintains cellular hydration is also impaired. Depending on genetics and lifestyle, the normal physiological functions of the skin may decrease by 50% by midlife. As the skin is the organ that most reflects the effects of the passage of time, your health and appearance are directly related to your eating habits and lifestyle. Ultraviolet radiation, excessive alcohol consumption, tobacco abuse and environmental pollution, among others, are factors that “speed up” the work of the biological clock causing premature aging. In addition, increased body weight and blood sugar levels also help the skin to age ahead of time.
Types of aging
Intrinsic or chronological skin aging: it is the result of the passage of time, determined mainly by genetic factors, hormonal status and metabolic reactions, such as oxidative stress. It contains the natural effects of gravity over the years, such as fine lines, thinning of the skin and dryness of the skin. The skin has degenerative effects similar to those seen in other organs, but it also reflects certain aspects of our inner health.
Extrinsic aging of the skin: it is caused by exposure to the sun and other environmental factors such as: lifestyle (physical exercise, food) and physiological and physical stress. One of the most important agents is ultraviolet solar radiation. The toxins with which we come into contact, such as tobacco, alcohol and air pollution, among others, also help in the skin aging process and, depending on the degree of exposure, can accelerate it.
TREATMENT
