WHICH IS?
The medical term for dry skin is cutaneous xerosis or xeroderma. Due to several factors, the skin can become dry in any part of the body. The legs are the areas where cutaneous xerosis is most evident. The center of the face, the scalp, the back and the central region of the chest, on the other hand, may be oily or dry regardless of the dry skin on other parts of the body, that is, one region of the skin may be dry and the other not. Long, hot baths, with sponges and a lot of soap, the sun, the wind, the cold, pollution and chemicals are the external factors best known to cause xerosis. The main chemicals are chlorine in swimming pools, products used in some professions, personal hygiene products, and household or work cleaning products, in this case mainly in the hands.
CAUSES
Skin diseases such as allergies, excessive sweating, genetic diseases and others can cause dry skin. In addition, internal diseases can also present with xerosis, which can be the first sign of alteration of the thyroid gland, especially in women. Also in women, cutaneous xerosis usually accompanies menopause. When accompanied by very dry hair with no other apparent cause, it can be a sign of malnutrition and anemia, especially in children.
Age is another factor that influences the degree of dryness of the skin. Thus, the elderly, due to extrinsic (photoaging) and intrinsic aging (typical of time), tend to have more dry skin. Particular attention should also be paid to children because, in addition to being more sensitive to external factors, healthy skin from childhood contributes to current and future well-being.
SYMPTOMS
Although dry skin is a symptom or condition due to other health or lifestyle problems, it can generate the following concomitant symptoms:
The skin appears hardened, especially after bathing or swimming, itching, peeling and cracking of the skin, which can be mild, moderate or severe, fine lines or "cracks", redness, deep cracks that can bleed.
